Live AID: Message from Nelson Mandela

"Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great.

You can be that great generation.

Millions of people in the world’s poorest countries are trapped in the prison of poverty.

It is time to set them free.

Poverty is not natural.

It is man made. It can be overcome by the actions of human beings.

The G8 Leaders when they meet in Scotland in July have already promised to focus on the issues of poverty especially in Africa.

The steps that they might take is very clear.

The first is ensuring trade justice.

The second is to end the debt crisis in the poorest countries

The third is to deliver much more aid, and make sure that it is of the highest quality.

I say to all those leaders not to look the other way.

Do not hesitate, reconise the world is hungry for action. Not words.

Act with courage, not fear.

Let us work together to end poverty this year.

And then we can all stand with our heads held high."

  1. I think he forgot something … all the 3 points he mentioned are what the world can do for them …
But how about the leaders in of those poor African countries? Take the example of Mogabe, or even S. Africa? Or even Indonesia — an other poor countries in this world that is not in African continent ??
YES. Poverty is mostly man-made. If those countries have some decent leaderships, their countries would not be in this dire shape by a very long shot. Even Malaysia, if the leaders of that country is free of corruptions and can control corruptions, Malaysia is a much more properous country.
I would add Point 4 — how to make sure these countries have good leaders.
