Admit it. ONE of you Must be buying what is offered in spams.

Socio-Political Rants

Under the law of supply and demand that governs everything in a capitalistic world which most of us are part of, it means that unless there is profit involved, there will be no supply. Therefore in a very unscientific research program called my “inbox” I would assume spammers are garnering a lot of business from all sorts of people who need enlargement, prescription drugs, hotgirls, and cash from Nigerian Scam artists with imaginary bank accounts. I simply cannot believe people will spend this much time and effort hijacking servers, stealing and amalgamating email lists and sending out million and millions of spams every day without any chance of profit in return.

So this is an OPEN CALL to anyone brave enough to admit that they are patrons of such advertising, and explain to me the demographics and target market of those who are currently subscribing and forcing the rest of us to delete nearly everything that comes to our email.

Thank You.

  1. You certainly piqued me interest!
Everyday my page gets ass-raped by comment spam, so naturally I’ve thought about it too..
But I think I probably learned the reason for it along time ago: it has something to do with increasing their google rank. I guess the more sites that link to them (because of their spamming), the higher up they show when someone searches for viagra or whatever 😦
either way, who the hell buys penis pills, gambles online (all the convenience of a casino with 0% of the fun), or signs up on online life insurance, and don’t you need a prescription for viagra anyways?
    So ya, still curious..

  2. They say there is a sucker born every minute…
The Nigerian scam and its variants are probably real life fraud situations – do a seach for 4 1 9 s c a m without the spaces in-between. Citibank phishing cases are also an example of this.
Then there are those companies that offer targetted marketing and are unscrupulous in how they actually target. These include companies offering email spam and targetted “hits” (i.e. spend X and get 1000 guaranteed hits in a month). These would fall under your laws of supply and demand.
There are those that ignore privacy laws and sell your email on for profit.
Mostly it is script kiddies who have nothing better to do. I think these account for most of the worms and spam out there. They are targetting poorly configured servers and vulnerable PCs. It’s not so much that there is profit but it is the fact that they can. And spamming one or a thousand machines with a worm-like script is all the same.
Some of the more entreprenial script kiddies have probably figured that one or two percent of the thousands of email address they spam will have a sucker in them, hand over some extra pocket money for them to spend on the weekend.
Mail on the Mac has a fairly good spam filter though. Although if you are using a free service like Yahoo, the only way is to rely on their servers to filter it out. If your mail is provided by another provider, perhaps ask them to install something like spam assassin on their servers. Let me know if you need further advice.

  3. Hold on a minute you mean I am not getting six million from my Nigerian friends? What has the world come to when you can’t trust a deposed dictator and his friends? And I am not sure my viagra is real now either. You have cast doubt on so many of the things I believed…

  9. no really, I am too old for that now. When I stand near the kids, the force of their energy kinda pushes me backwards. It’s kinda crazy. Anyway, I am the camera person nowadays. More like the grown up part of the festival.
