I’ve been there, and returned my share of LCDs to Fry’s Electronics.. he he he! This is what I’ve found –
17″ has really small type, at 1280×1024 resolution. 15″ (1024X768) is great for most uses (web, word processing, photos). If you want to go bigger, 18″ (also 1280×1024) is definitely better than 17″.

19″ screens also have 1280×1024 and that’s the last size before the resolution increases, usually from 1600×1200 and up.
