Recently I have been thinking a lot about Canada, it’s a democracy, it has free speech, it has socialized medicine, clean water, extremely left and liberal, not many gun deaths, according to Michael Moore, people can leave their doors unlocked. Most of the Canadians I have met tend to be chilled, polite, genial and easy to get along with. Plus the added benefit of having extremely good Chinese food, American TV, and orca whales. It seems like a pretty cool place, somewhere I would like to live at some point in my life. Except it’s really COLD. I know that Canadians will tell me how once it hits about minus 40 you can’t feel the difference, but it’s getting there that I worry about. I suppose with weather like that the government has to make sure the place is about as livable as possible otherwise there will be a mass exodus to warmer climates. How sad, now if some people out there can create a warm climate liberal country, you know like Australia in the 70s, except not so far away from the rest of the world, I would like to move there for a time.
Don’t forget that Canadians are just darn funny too! They have a great sense of humour and are not uptight. My kind of neighbours!

Why do all warm countries have cshitty political situations? Spain may be alright. Maybe? No chinese food, and it gets damn hot…

If it ever hit minus 40 in Vancouver, you’d see the reverse exodus begin. Perhaps it’ll get that cold on the very, very rare occasion in Toronto. On the other hand the homes are centrally heated and you don’t have to worry too much about air con in the summer.

have you considered rhode island in the summer and miami in winter?

I like Windsor, Canada, just across the Ambassador Bridge from Detroit. It was the city in Moore’s film. It is far cleaner than Detroit, the people more polite, and exponentially safer.
Here in Detroit (and across the river in Windsor) it doesn’t get THAT cold. Nevertheless, during the winter I’d say the temp hovers somewhere between colder than I like and hair-raising ball-shrinking-frigid cold.

Yan,
The US has allot of problems, but no place else makes people believe they live in a free state quite as well. And I have to say, San Diego does have nice weather. So if you can believe, even when it is hard and I think you can, and want great weather then this is as good as it gets.

Oh yeah, one more thing. A good friend of mine told me recently that San Francisco is a great city to live in.

My thoughts on Canada almost exactly, I do love it having spent most of my life there. Even in the worst areas of the city (Toronto), things are comparably livable.
But I hate the cold like poison. It’s like every year I gain weight and seem lonely and miserable during the winter .. I guess that means I have to make the most of the summer then 🙂
About that comment, that all homes are heated: Well of course that’s true. There really isn’t any other choice. But eventually you’ll have to take the trip outside – it’s like the cold version of hell.
I remember when the furnace in the house broke from overuse and generally shitty quality. House temperatures were about -18C!! When I leave, it’ll be the horror of Toronto winter that’ll keep me from looking back too long..

After last night’s game, cars were driving the streets, honking horns with fans hanging out the windows screaming their drunken heads off, until about 2 am.

Your only option in Canada if your’re worried about the cold is Vancouver, which rarely goes below zero in the winter. I am returning to Canada after living abroad for a few years, and even though I’m from one of the coldest areas, I am going to settle in Vancouver–mostly due to the weather. It also grows some of the best pot in the world and has started to be known as Vansterdam.

I thought you were in Hong Kong? New Zealand is only a 9 (or maybe 10 or 11) hour flight away (that’s to the evil Auckland- get yourself south of the Bombay Hills as soon as you arrive) and Australia is 2000-odd kilometres closer to HK. Why should you even contemplate the frozen wastes whose sole purpose on this earth is to protect America from the worst of the Arctic winds? The north of Australia is both tropical and much closer to Hong Kong than Canada, the south of Australia is no colder than the centre of New Zealand, and if you’re contemplating Australia, you should at least consider New Zealand, which has a hell of a lot more water, the world’s best rugby team, and….. ummm…… kiwis…. and really beautiful scenery (far better than Australia’s deserts). And neither is as cold as Canada.

A lot of these qualities you mentioned are actually true and the only other places I want to move to are the Scandanavian countries.
One thing I can’t stand about Canada (especially in Toronto) is its bleakness and that comes from the fat middle class and generous welfare program. I suppose everything comes with a price.
