Riding With Hong Kong Street Racers
Phone call at lunch:
-Do you want to make some extra money?
-What for?
-To Take Photos.
-Of what?
-People… it’s not black mail…
-What kind of people?
-Just someone’s family
-In what way?
-Has to be in Central..
-What do you want to use it for?
-Just pictures of some people in Central…. But you know it will have to be hidden, they can’t know you have taken them…
-What are you using it for??
-Well, it’s for my boss, some people owe him hundred of thousands of dollars and he wants it back.
-No
-Why?
-Because I don’t do this sort of thing.
-We’re not going to hurt them,
-I don’t know if you would. What if you do? Either way, this isn’t for me.
-Can I borrow your camera then?
-Why don’t you buy one of those disposable ones in the supermarket.
-I have one like that already.
-Use that then…
-Yeah, Okay. Bye
-Bye..
Dammit. Things like this makes me know, I don’t want to bother with finishing the film. Coz their right and wrong is different from my right and wrong and I don’t really want to be around people like that, because the longer I hang, the more stuff like this happens.
In my world, threatening someone is wrong, threatening someone through their family is despicable. In their world, borrowing a huge sum of money and not giving it back is wrong, and the only way to prevent someone from skipping out of a large amount of cash is scaring them to pay it back.
And I don’t even know if the guy who called me is that connected, but it seems he called the person “Boss” which means that’s his “brother” or it means that the guy owns his garage, and he owes money to that man, and if that person who asks something of you, you have to do it, coz you can’t piss him off. Hong Kong needs a proper small business loan system that is better than what it is, so people don’t get trapped like this.
I never particularly see myself as a “moral” person, but moments like this when mine are challenged, I realize that maybe I am. I would never be able to live with myself if something happened because of a photo I took. I know that if I didn’t take it someone else would, but as long as I am not involved then it’s not my business. In their world, as long as they aren’t the person sending the photo, or doing the threatening or being the actual person who hurt the other, it’s not their business. They just hand in their part of their work and they go away. If the person didn’t borrow that money, if that person didn’t not repay it, then it won’t happen. We all have to make a living, and we all have different ideas of responsibilities, and what we are willing to be involved in.
Interesting subject for a new documentary?
