Falling into the Wan Chai Trap: The Spiral into the Asian Sex Trade

(Excerpt From Above Post)

The below two paragraphs are reposted from Conrad’s site

spotted Sxxxxx, a [nationailty withheld] “working girl” who claims to be in love with me [Note to male readers — should you be approached my this girl, I’d suggest giving it a miss. (this is linked to the photo of this woman) She’s crap in bed . . . unless the prospect of being paid increases her enthusiasm significantly. It might, given she claims to charge HK$3,000 a go, which only proves there actually is a sucker born every minute]. Bad sex or not, it was three o’clock in the morning and I’m newly girlfriendless, so I permitted myself to be persuaded to take her home with me

Sunday, September 7, 2003
I awoke this morning with a poisonous hangover and an unspeakably ugly girl in my bed. I know, I know, ‘looks aren’t everything,’ you say. ‘Maybe she has a wonderful personality’. Perhaps she does. I’ll never know, as she didn’t speak a word of English.

===

It’s like these guys like to pretend it’s all in fun, all good natured, except all those women who are there, were either tricked into coming to HK as “dancers” then forced to work. Or came here to work as maids and had a second career because their lives are so dead end and they have a huge family to support back at home that doing this with a chance for “Lucky Love,” someone who might actually fall in love with them, marry them and take them out of their lives, is worth the chance.

It’s not good natured at all. It’s a sex trade of the rich and poor countries, it’s a sex trade between the high earning men and women who had no opportunities. If you’re a woman, and sometimes a young boy, it’s one way out.

These girls might pretend they enjoy in front of their customers, these men might like to lie to themselves, but all it takes is an hour talking to these women, which I have once or twice to know how much they hate their lives, and their work and what’s going on. They will always say, “What can you do? That’s what happens if you are poor, and we all need money.” Sometimes the really smart ones will tell you, “My country is poor, this part of the world is poor, this is what we do.”

Yes, most of Asia is poor, it’s easy to forget that when you live in Hong Kong, when you think of Japan, Singapore, even Shanghai as Asia. But how many people think of Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, the rest of China and all those places and what’s the realities of these places so what happens in Wan Chai can happen.

The Asian Sex Trade is alive and happening. Due to the unequal distribution of wealth in this part of the world it’s so much more obvious and wide spread and people like me, normal people who just live our normal lifes or just go about blogging have to rub shoulders with it and rather than have it just part of the background, and have to deal with it where it’s front and center and must pretend to go along otherwise my site get attacked, just shows how every day and what a problem this is.

It’s such a sad fact about Asia.

To read the whole article Falling into the Wan Chai Trap: The Spiral into the Asian Sex Trade

On the net much like in life. There are a lot of over forty cheek touchers who like to put photos of girls half their age semi-nude up on the net “(If it’s your girlfriend and she likes that, well that’s fine with me, coz you’re just a lucky guy and if it’s pictures of yourself you’re putting up, well I think you’re just brave).

But on this side of the world these cheek touching men are always white and have a penchant for Asian Chicks. I find it gross. Really icky. Like the guys who go off to Thailand or Wan Chai and partake in the Asian Sex Trade. Me and my friends find them gross in real life. Sadly, people over in the China English blogging community seem to find it funny and acceptable. Which is crazy coz they supposedly act like they really care about China and Asia, but degrading women is okay. (Welcome to Asia).. and if you’re an Asian Woman or even just a woman of any background who supports them, just makes me wonder why, but everyone to their own.

However, I love this little blog and generally have way too much fun doing this. So on this horrible rainy afternoon which means I don’t feel like leaving the house. I feel like removing every single link that is linked to the over forty cheek toucher’s sites.

If you have been removed that’s why. Nothing personal. I like to make my degrees of separation simply further from them. No reason that my internet life should be any closer to them than my real one.

The Next Day

Wow, here we go!!! It’s all blowing up again. (roll of eyes) and they are coming here and bitching at me, and they are all over the place bitching about me. See? This is how the blogger behaves, his supporters behave and his readers. Why would I want to be linked to them?? It’s all so clear! 🙂

They will post what you said they don’t like, don’t tell you so you have no idea what’s going on (at least Mr. C tracked back me), then send a bunch of people to come and say horrible things!!! (This is like highschool,) I haven’t read their sites but I am preettii sure no one is bending backwards defending me over there.

Not that anyone over there seems capable of conversation and engagement. Mud slinging and insults are the way they go about. Which as might be why they find their way into the internet to vent their frustrations coz they can’t talk, not in real life. Not on the net. Throw stupid racist remarks on my site for what? So they can show ever MORE people what fools they are. Go on. Keep doing it. Leave your names too.

Come on, touch my cheek AND attack me. So much lurve.

Anyway that mob really bugs me. It happens every now and again to other people too. Which is why I TOOK DOWN all those links in that WHOLE crew. I can’t tell who will behave that way and who won’t. I can’t tell which blogger supports and condones this kind of roving pack mentality and which don’t. One who I would never have thought would do it, did. So obviously you can’t tell. I just know some people who read those blogs do and that is what they are like therefore sadly everyone who are linked had to go..

So if I think about it.. it wasn’t really about the pictures as much it was how they treat other people. More the whole attitude and mentality.

This is soooo silly.

But it also proves to me that my bored Sunday afternoon behavior which I put about two seconds thought into, was over all a VERY good call.

The Day After After

I got loads of private emails telling me that they respect my decision, here is the one I find most interesting, coz actresses are one thing, porn images of UNDERAGE girls another. Some people can tell the difference. Well some people have better facilities than others. It’s always obvious on days like this.

Just wanted to say I support the efforts you make to bring attention to
this issue. I do agree with you observations. Keep in there and don’t let ’em
intimidate you.

I am partly responsible also for objectiving women for I do put photo of women on my site
but most of these guys have taken these images from
porn sites. Mine are all celebrities in their own right. Even if you don’t agree with my
lifestyle, I still think it’s good what you say about this “problem”.

Applause.

OPEN LETTER TO CONRAD, RICHARD AND FRIENDS

Published by Yan Sham-Shackleton

Yan Sham-Shackleton is a Hong Kong writer who lives in Los Angeles. This is her old blog Glutter written mostly in Hong Kong from 2003 to 2007. Although it was a personal blog, Yan focused a lot on free speech issues and democratic movement in Hong Kong. She moved to the US in 2007.

  1. Hi Yan,
Saw your argument, I can’t say I disagree with the background reason for your action (I don’t read Conrad for this, and I even have to close my browser rather precipitously at times when I happen to look at his blog when taking a break in the office). However, you must acknowledge the fact that ‘the Gweilo Diaries’ (I don’t know the other one) is much more than its pictures. There are worthy news with broad debate (and that comes from someone maybe the exact political opposite from Conrad), and often pretty fun too.
You may want to discuss this directly with the relevant bloggers directly (you could convince them to post the pictures in a separate page for instance) without imposing this censorship. Your other posts on democracy in Hong Kong would be one reason why you should do this.
I don’t appreciate the pics myself, so I don’t look, but I don’t avoid the rest of the blog, because that’s what I want to read. Please, your action reminds me of some countries in South East Asia, where in the name of morals one forbids plurality.

  2. Fair decision, I think. I’ve been a lot more careful about what links I click on LiC for just this reason, after a similar office-blushing moment like that described above. I shall look forward to clicking your links when I should be working.
Taking down the links to linkers is perhaps more than most people who have done, but it’s your blog and your choice.

  3. No interest in percipitating debate. I think others have tried but failed. Conrad in particular, the other people have their own brand of decision making processes that is different from mine. Fine. Cool. Whatever floats your boat. It’s their blogs after all. They do what they want. I don’t like it, I don’t click.
Where is the censorship? Where in this post do I say they can’t do it? They are welcome to. The internet is a free space. I also have every right to remove the links I want. This is MY blog. I asked Conrad to remove me, he did. The other didn’t. Fine. What am I supposed to link to every stupid blog I don’t read? in the name of plurality? Am I supposed to support people whose politics I don’t relate to? Notice no right wing blogs linked? Notice no Nazi sites linked? Well, maybe some people who read this blog also read those blogs, but generally they DON’T.
Accusing me off “Censorship” is sorta silly. Censorship denotes POWER. It is implicit saying that I have some sort of right over there actions. I don’t. Calling me a puritain and not allowing pluraity is a joke. I am not here to love those who I don’t like and support those who support things I don’t agree with. What you just said is far more in line with that line of thinking. i.e. NOT respecting my decisions in MY space.

  4. Anyway, just like in life. I don’t hang with over 40 cheek touchers and their friends, my friends don’t go into bars or other places they frequent. I am sure they all have very interesting political and wide ranging topics for discussion. But WHY? there are lots of other people in this universe who is interesting and wide ranging that I feel comfortable with. 🙂

  5. Yes it’s your choice, but don’t call all the people you have removed ‘cheek touchers’, that’s insulting and a gross generalisation (not a proof of openness).

  6. I can see what your saying and honestly I didn’t really put as much thought into it, but then I’m not as affected by the situation. fwi, I have recently deleted conrad from my bloglinks – the reason was because I just stopped reading (I’m not really into hard-core politics as much as i used to be) and I wanted to keep my links trim. Others are gone now too, and while I don’t have nearly as long a link list as you I still feel the need the need to keep everything prim and proper.
I see that I’m not linked anymore 😦 , but you have a good point and I’ll still keep reading 🙂 Keep up the good work

  10. I think your jealous of us foreigners getting the best of your women. You want to know why we do? We dont treat them like shit. Thats right you get any chinese woman to tell a foreigner what she thinks of Chinese men and your told that they are uncaring, rude, selfish and sexually underperforming. Now I’m sure there are many many chinese “men” who are not like this but it seems the majority are. You can make petty insecure insults against us foreigners all you want but the fact is your just jealous that we get the best looking women and we have the ability to keep them. Go back to your copy of Playboyand box of kleenex.

  11. I feel frustrated as you do when once trapped to half finish Conrad’s lusty accounts of his affairs with a married Japanese woman + an underage Thai or whatever national she was and regularly his seemingly Japanese girl semi-nude photos. Bravo! My hat off to you. They definitely deserve a removal.

You get it wrong the best of “our” women (like myself) think guys like you, ie. Not foreigners, as not all are that way. Just cheap ass ones like you who are rude, selfish, and has a huge ego and can’t read properly or engage in a conversation without falling into insults. Just kinda.. well GROSS.

  13. Hmmmm I have to respond to Chris here, when he says that Chinese men (according to ‘any Chinese woman’) are ‘uncaring, rude, selfish and sexually underperforming’… Funny, that. That’s exactly how I felt when I was dating white men like you!
Chris, ask any woman in any culture from any race and she’ll tell you that 99% of the men she deals with are total cocks. For those of us who are lucky enough to find a genuine, loving individual, culture and skin color is really just incidental.

Although I agree. Read my bad chat ups. More coming soon.
There were Chinese guys from HK, white-american guys, black-american guys, a British born Chinese guys, an english guy, a guy from New Zealand, all races, cultures and countries. Boring guys who aren’t always nice crosses all cultures and boundaries and ages. Close minded fools who like to disrespect people come in all shapes, sizes, shades and passports!!

  15. Yan, you’re right on! I think I’ve observed a cheek-toucher in action.
I was in Japan about six months ago and saw no less than fifteen “odd” pairings: old white men courting young Asian women. I remember overhearing a conversation between a couple in a busy market. It went something like this:
Dirty old white guy: “You’re beautiful.” [Long dramatic pause, staring uncomfortably into the young Japanese girl’s face]
Girl: Thank yew… [Looking away from dirty’s gaze, appearing very uncomfortable]
Dirty: “Are you happy?” [Eyes still locked onto the girl’s turned away face]
Girl: what? [Looking back at him every few moments, apparently not fluent in English]
Dirty: “Are you happy to be here?” [Sounding extremely awkward]
    Girl: I think so…” [Awkwardly]
Dirty: [silence, but still staring “lovingly” …]
The old guy’s face was inches from hers, and his intonation was as if he were trying to speak seductively. Maybe to him he was romantic, but to everyone else, he was just a pathetic dirty old white schmuck.
These guys turn my stomach. They ought to grow a pair, show some integrity, and crawl back under the decaying logs from whence they came.

  17. Have to say nuff respect to Ms Glutter for taking a stand against the, well, paedo pervs, ’cause thats what they are. Fortunately I don’t believe they are wholly representative of the western males in HK (of whom I am one) but they are a significant minority, and quite frankly an embarrassment.
Sadly its an all too common sight in HK – Bloated, unnattractive 30 and 40 somethings such as Conrad, been in HK a few years, strutting around with a tiny filipina on their arm as if they are some kind of stud, boasting of bedding indonesian domestic helpers as if its some fantastic achievement akin to porking a Miss World, or drooling over Japanese women dressed up to look like pre-pubescent schoolgirls.
Its just plain sad. I however derive a great deal of satisfaction when I actually see pictures of these guys – Either fat, bald or ugly – In Conrad’s case, probably all three. He loves to post pictures, but never of himself. Why, I wonder.
“Chris” who posted on Jan 20 is a pretty good example of the western male superiority complex that is so visible here. All the usual slurs and cliches are dragged up. But this is a guy who thinks that staggering out of Fenwicks at 4am with a “flipper” or “little brown fucking machine” (the phrases their ilk use, not me) on his arm is proof that asian females find western males “irresistable”. How very sad.
Worst of all, these are guys who get so insecure when a western female dares to date outside her race (god forbid she even dare to date an asian male). Hypocrites one and all.

  18. I remember a discussion with one of my woman students in Taiwan. She was quite surprised to hear that I didn’t go out getting drunk in the ‘foreigner bars’ and trying to pick up younger drunk girls from among the ‘foreigner groupies’.Apparently the Taiwanese assume (not without reason) that that is the typical behaviour for most of the western men in Taipei. For the most part I didn’t like many of people I met in those bars, or those I went to in Japan or Hong Kong. Sleezy pick-up joints are sleezy pick-up joints, no matter where they are. And I definitely agree that many of the jerks I met would have had great difficulty getting laid in their own countries because they wouldn’t have had ‘being foreign’ as an excuse for acting like an arsehole.

  20. Actually, these guys behave the same way in their own country. They are called ‘cradle robbers’ and only hit on women half their age. These cheek-touchers just prefer asian. Same behavior though.
The weird thing is, more and more women are behaving in the same manner towards younger men. I think it is just the western ‘youth == beauty’ fascination.
And unfortunately, considering all the harping about how ‘ugly’ these men are, it seems this viewpoint has spread beyond western civ. A pity.

  21. Explain how I’m a cradle snatcher. Im 18 my girlfriend is 24.
I’m not really trying to defend the way Conrad behaves but you are painting all white foreigners with the same brush. I dont see any mention of the fact Japanese men are famous for planning China Sex Tours.
As for prostitution there are not enough foreigners in this country to support the whole trade yes they add to the situation but the economic base for the sex industry is the native population. I actually know very few foreigners in Beijing who have used a hooker.
Alot of foreigners come here as I did and find Women jumping at them.Any man no matter what his colour or creed will find it VERY difficult to say no to that. Rightly it is pretty awful when you see a very old foreigner with a very young Chinese woman but you also have to realise that, that woman made a choice to be with him. You have to question here morals as well as his as she will have probably latched on to him to get access to his cash.
LET ME BE CLEAR IN NO WAY DO I SUPPORT THE EXPLOITATION OF WOMEN THROUGH PROSTITUTION
To finish you seem to promote free speech and actions on this site so you should also recognise the free actions of others asian and caucasian to date or sleep with whoever they want.

Not to say you can’t be the one man conversation on this thread forever. I mean you can be the moderator of this post forum for all I care. But it’s a little sad to be stuck in a post when everyone has moved on, coz it’s still MY Site. If you want to take over and take pot shots at Me, do it somewhere else. NO ONE CARES here. Notice everyone ignored Phil’s last message to me also.
Coz it’s my site. People tend to LIKE me over here. Go to SeeLai if you want to bitch about me. They are really good at that. Join the cheek touchers! or you can chill out and hang with liberal, smart, hip, young ones from all over the world. Some of us get old quicker than others. Some were stupid to begin with. Some are conservatives at three. Nobody is any of those three here.
