Street Racing: Agreements Impossible to Keep

Riding With Hong Kong Street Racers

At the end of our ride, as I was walking into my apartment block Mike called me back and asked a favor. Something I don’t think I can deliver on. I tried with something else, I went out on a search, but came out blank. I had forgotten about it now, but I should have my eye out for this more often, now I am back in the social circuit. I tried explaining to him why what he is asking is not something I can do anymore. I used to be able to a year or two ago, but it’s not something I come across anymore. He was really adamant. “Come on Yan, there are a million gwei gais in HK you know. Some of them could help.” I say, “I will try,” but the honest truth is I know I might mention it once to one person, and never think of it again. But just for his piece of mind, I tell him “Okay, do my best.”

Then it makes me think, how many times he says he will help me on the film, and how maybe he can’t deliver either, but thinks about it when it crosses his mind.

He believes in the project and the only person in that scene that understands what I am doing and why. There is no crap when he says it, nothing to gain because he doesn’t race himself anymore. He says it because he does want to help.

But how far do I push? It took me sitting at the garage for weeks, refusing in my quiet way to leave before they allowed me to film. Do I sit quietly or do I really bug him about it? And if I can’t deliver on my own, “Sures,” why should he do that for me?
