Utila, Honduras -Dive Logs

Stories From a Backpacking Addict

As I start creating my huge step by step diary to Central America, I have been typing out my dive logs, faxes home (unfortunately the faxes recieved had finally faded), and diary entries. Here are so of my faves.

Dive 80

20/50/ 20/30

Working on movments in water. Perceptions. Where to look, how to frame my vision. Looked at things really closely just for the patterns. Then pull back and look at the light. Most fun was staring at the empty space on the coral wall. Eye is automatically attracted to movment and color so by refocusing you see things I otherwise would miss.

I saw a spotted drum. A BABY. With it’s black and white tail floating about it. It’s rare to even see one, let alone one the size of the first section of the thumb. (first time I spotted one by myself.

Also a 2 meter long morry just lying there in a opening. Doesn’t look healthy. Not good, sigh. It was only half the size of the one at ron’s wreak, so that thing must be huge and this one shouldn’t be dying so young.

We even ate at Pigeons Key, hambugers and coca cola! And got some snapper for dinner.

NICE NICE 80th Dive. (I think Pete and Hector they did it on purpose for me, tho they would NEVER admit it.

Night Dive, Just Matty and Me (ha ha, too many divemasters and it’s my turn! To be free)

SAW HUGE OCTOPUS, WATCHED IT GO FROM BLUE TO PARTS SPOTTED ORANGE, THEN TENT UP OVER CORAL, SWIM, MOVE AROUND, TENTICLES STRETCH AND SHRINK. TRIED TO TOUCH IT AND BUT IT MOVED. WATCHED IT FOR AGES AND AGES. SEEMS LIKE A HOLLOW EYE SOCKET. AS IF IT’S GAUZE THAT CHANGES COLORS AND CAN STRETCH OVER ANY SURFACE. SEMI TRANSPARENT, NOT A SOLID OBJECT OR ANIMAL AT ALL.

Finally, finally got to feed to coral. We caught worms and put it above a brain coral and as it ate it the worm EXPLODES. Phitchew! Sorta spreads like a splash of color, and since the worms are purple or orange, red or yellow, it was like a big brain spirting out colors.

Then just as we were ascending, mat shines the light on a star fish and that’s the last thing I saw.
