Hmm. You gotta say at least the WTO meetings themselves are peaceful..

Wto3So the first tear gas canisters have been thrown, the protesters have pepper spray, railings have been pulled down, metal sticks torn off police railings used. Hundred probably thousands of police has been mobilized, and all TV stations are playing the live feeds. Hong Kong has not seen any riots since 1960’s, all the roads coming towards where I live has been changed and it’s completely mad.

You know, you have to give it to the World Trade Organization themselves to actually be peaceful. I mean there are one hundred and something countries all discussing contentious subjects of trade, water, cotton, and yet no one turns it into a threat of violence. It’s not like bigger countries are threatenning to send troups in if they don’t sign some deal which is what they used to do. You don’t have to look too far, Hong Kong is Hong Kong because the Chinese government then didn’t want the British to sell Opium and they went to war. I think as I watch the practically theatrical outbursts of violence in my city right now, I think there is a lot to say about trade, and agreements, laws, and meetings. It’s really much more pleasent that threats of war, or riots or terroism.
