Learning about Sudan

I just came across a group of Sudanese men protesting in Milan over their political status in Italy, some of them were taken into custody but I think they have all been released. So I am trying to learn more about the situation there.

Today’s News:  SUDAN: Escalating violence jeopardises harvest, ICRC warns

NAIROBI, 28 October (IRIN) – Escalating violence throughout the western
Sudanese region of Darfur poses a threat to the November harvest as
well as to the seasonal migration of livestock, the International
Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a report released on Thursday.

"Clashes
between the parties to the conflict, tribal violence linked to cattle
looting and access to grazing pastures, and increasing banditry have
resulted in the death of scores of civilians and combatants, with
hundreds more wounded, and displaced thousands of civilians who have
had to take refuge in already overcrowded camps," the ICRC report noted.

"Our main concern is that the recent displacements, especially those engaged in
farming, will greatly affect the harvest," Paul Conneally, ICRC communication coordinator in Khartoum, told IRIN on Friday.Initial
assessments estimated that 7,000 people had been displaced following
the attacks on villages around Tawilla town in North Darfur in
mid-September, but Conneally said the ICRC was conducting an assessment
to establish the scale of the displacement and its effect on the
upcoming harvest. More

Sudan Civil War

The ongoing civil war has displaced more than 4 million southerners.
Some fled into southern cities, such as Juba; others trekked as far
north as Khartoum and even into Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Egypt, and
other neighboring countries. These people were unable to grow food or
earn money to feed themselves, and malnutrition and starvation became
widespread. The lack of investment in the south resulted as well in
what international humanitarian organizations call a “lost generation”
who lack educational opportunities, access to basic health care
services, and little prospects for productive employment in the small
and weak economies of the south or the north. More

Failed Peace Process

But a civil war continued in the Darfur region of western Sudan,
where over one million people have been displaced by government-allied
militias. Similarly, in the Shilluk Kingdom of Upper Nile, militias
have displaced between 50,000 and 150,000 people since February 2004 in
clashes over territory and resources. More
