Socio-Political Rants
Not to put too much of a downer on the current first world "feel good fest" of donating unprecedented amounts of money and aid to disaster relief. With governments and parties jostling as being seen as the best and biggest donators, which will help buy political clout both within their own country and also the in recieving end in the future.
<s>(Please Australia, please stop being “proud of being Australian” for the money you have donated. The people who have are good people, and the people who haven’t really shouldn’t get credit just coz they live in the same country.</s> (I take it back) And Jack Straw (the British foreign secretary) saying how Britain’s aid is not only large but the way it’s distributed is the “most” substantial. eye roll) (but i still eye roll on "most" substancial. What does that mean??)
I read this in UN Puts Tsunami Toll at 150,000, Warns It May Soar
As the world poured out its heart for the victims, a women’s collective in Sri Lanka said rapists were preying on survivors at refuge centers. The U.N. Joint Logistics Center said pirates were a threat to aid supplies along Sumatra’s west coast.
In Aceh, officials said they were investigating reports of trafficking in orphans.
Sweden sent police to Thailand to investigate the reported kidnap of a Swedish boy of 12 whose parents were washed away, and said it was keeping the names of some victims secret after homes in Sweden were targeted by thieves.
I just am always amazed how there are certain numbers of the human population who are cruel and self indulgent to their own benefits, and how pathetic is it that these traits are not bred out because there are some sort of evolutionary potential to it. There is a trade off most creatures have, that wants to be protective of their own species and community, and places that over that of themselves in times of great danger, threats and stress. Sadly that doesn’t kick in for some.
And to ward off my cynicism, I am still thinking about the best way to raise some money on Glutter and Goodbye Leslie. It’s totally possible, just looking for the most efficient way forward.
Um…not to depress you any further, but I really hate humans today: http://apnews.myway.com/article/20050101/D87BFNJG0.html – Officials Probe Child Rape in Sri Lanka

I donated some money, as well as keeping my world vision kid safe and well. It really doesn’t take much to help someone out.

It is such a tragedy, that this has happened and now some are making it worse by abusing the most vulnerable. 😦
It can get pretty cringe worthy all this i’m doing more than you stuff in the media that draper mentioned, but I guess it has a payoff in that heaps of cash is being raised, although as Yan mentioned, then some people get the smug attitude that Australia is the best and most humane, compassionate country anywhere (just don’t mention asylum seekers!).
I can’t imagine losing my family and everything I have, I hope all those affected can rebuild somehow.

Oh, dammit, have your smugness. As I discovered I have mine. Oh btw, we’re doubling your contributions per capita!! I am KIDDING. As Shakey said, it’s not a competition.
If you want to follow up this rather amuzing train of events of commentary against “who wins the most compassionate award.”
