  1. I doubt it was a mistake. One does not go to war by mistake. Bush knew that it would be irrelevant if it was a mistake or not once US troops were in Iraq and the existing government dismantled. Leaving now is almost unthinkable. He got what he wanted.

  2. What amazes me is that both Bush and Blair seem to be copping some heat over the issue, but the third amigo John Howard isn’t getting any flack at all. Australia jumped in straight away, then left quietly leaving everyone else to clean up. Although Australia did benefit by getting a free trade deal that they just signed with the US, so I shouldn’t be complaining right ? 😛
I know Howard wouldn’t get much attention internationally anyway, no matter how much he portays himself as a world leader, but it amazes me that over here, he can get away with pretty much anything, mud just slides right off him.
Man I hope Bush loses the upcoming election!

  3. Good point! He was all over the place at the beginning making up the coalition. Actually Australia is one of the few countries which are not “bound” by “aid” packages to do so. Sigh. Your country had such such liberal social and political policies for so long. Such a shame for it to backlash in such a terrible way.
I hope Bush doesn’t “win” either. But he didn’t last time.

  4. I’d say it was still so soon after Bali that no-one really cared in Australia.
Didn’t he play down the WMD threat and play the “security interests of the nation” card, encompassing the possible terrorist links with Al-Qaeda too?
And, as you rightly point out, Howard’s standing on the world stage is not as big as he would like to think it is.

  5. OZ (well, only Howard probably) wants to be the leader in the Asia-Pacific region?
The free trade agreement costs the lives in Bali though. 😦

  6. If he wants that he should be buddying up with China and not the US. Fool.
The more I think about it, the more i think Mike is right. How come Howard gets to get away with everything in Australia. the Australian Broadcasting network made some disparging remarks about the war and they got their funding cut!!!
Like why are people in Australia not chasing him up like some are with Bush and Blair. And why did my sister go to a protest over the war in Canberra when Bush was there. Shouldn’t she be protesting Howard everyday?

  7. Howard is just lucky.
Also Blair and Bush are coming under criticism for their own domestic policies too. The Brits have always have had a thing against the Americans when they start throwing their weight around. Much that Thatcher was hated, she still managed to foster that “special relationship” while letting the UK appear strong. Blair hasn’t and has come out looking like Bush’s poodle.

  8. Hey Yan, good on your sister for protesting Bush when he came to Canberra, unfortunately I remember that they took great measures to ensure that Bush would be no where near any protesters when he arrived so he wouldn’t be embarrassed. From the media pictures it looked like the secret service had just invaded canberra and took over.
How does Howard get away with it?
I don’t know but I think Eshin makes a good point about Bush and Blair coming under criticism for their domestic policies whilst Australia seems to be a very conservative country at the moment and many people seem to love having a leader who at least appears to be “tough.” There’s always hope though, the opposition leader Mark Latham seems to be making some ground. We have an election coming up later this year and although I still think it will take a miracle for Howard to lose, there is still time.
About the ABC (Australian broadcasting) they get criticised all the time for being too left wing, which basically means that they don’t always follow the party line. This seems to happen a lot, if you disagree with the government you are a left wing loony! I think it comes from having a weak opposition party for too long.

  9. Why is it that disagreeing with the government makes you left wing loony? Why can’t it be that disagreeing with your government makes them a right wing conservative nut? Why? This means we just have to kick all those “dissent squashing neocons assholes” out of office and then we can start calling them names and taking away the grants!!!!
