Laos 1999: Night Out With the Expats, Vienchan 1999

Stories of a Backpacking Addict

Subject: Quick Note

Mad. Just spent a night with a
bunch of expat brats and having a good time. It’s so
like HK when I was in school you won’t believe it.
Shocker. Anyway we are at the resturant playing pool
and the guys let me use the computer for a bit, so I
couldn’t help it but say hello again.

Subject: 70s Night.

Last night I ended up at this expat 70’s party. It was totally weird. I couldn’t decide if I was enjoying it or hating it, I think it was equal levels of both. All these expats in 70’s gear, sounding, looking, being expat. But I can’t complain coz they have been so nice, like inviting me to their homes and stuff. They were the people I met the first night. They didn’t have to. I just sorta turned up at a resturant and we started talking, and they were like, “Come join us!”

The costumes were amazing. They got people to make it for them and stuff, so tailored 70s gear. Not what you just threw together, platform boots, matching outfits, too much!!! Then to this club in a hotel. It was fun, I liked just hanging out.

They were playing some good old circa 1995 techno. Brought me back places. I only had like a few beers and now I am hung over. Pathetic. But haven’t been dancing for months.. no, a year.

There was some drama with one of them insulting a local guy and I think someone’s moped tires were slashed. He was pretty drunk and embarrassing to start off with, and the guys were shouting, “This is Laos! This is our country. You get out!”

One of the mixed girls who I was hanging out with tried to mediate, but I pulled her back and said, “Just back off, let them deal with it. It’s not our problem.” She looked relieved actually as she pretty much agreed with what the Lao guy was saying and just got sucked in because they were telling her “Tell him this. Tell him that!” So a few of us girls just sat around in the corner hiding as we all agreed that expat guy was totally out of order. We were like, “Same, same everywhere. Some people should stay home.”

We are all going out for dinner tonight too, the nice people I met. My early Christmas do, as they thought I should have a Christmas dinner as I was away from my family. I saw some funny shiny hats, maybe I will buy them and make them wear them.. next stop back to Luang Prabang! Can’t wait.
