Nike use to have greenhouse gases in their Air Nikes. They don’t anymore. The stuff that keeps a lot of people from knee injury, let them bounce in comfort, and embroil teens in fashion hell, no longer contributes to the giant big hole in the Ozone Layer.
One of the guys who implemented and invented this is no longer with Nike, he’s not even working. In fact he’s lost everything he created for himself, because for a while he was shooting up meth.
What a total waste and fuck up. What a horrible story. .
Today it clicked as to maybe why.
No one goes around experimenting with greenhouse safe gases for industrial use if they didn’t believe that we can create something better. Environmental Science is a hopeful endeavor in general. Until very recently, there was no money to be made in that field. For a person who embarked on that 20 years ago and stuck with it, something inside of him must have wanted to do something for the world.
Nike. Not a nice place. In fact a company whose name is synonymous with “Sweat Shops” and “Child Labor.” And as someone who implemented the change over, this person would have had to go into the factories, he would have to know how and where the products are manufactured.
So in the meantime, even if he’s being rewarded, he had to watch a lifetime work bought and taken over. And help work out how his invention is best hand pumped into shoes by 16 year olds with no education for 16 hours a day at non existent wages.
What a horrible thing to have to deal with.
I could understand that desperate need to escape.
His brother once called globalization “The modern day slave trade,” and went on to explain why he wanted no part in it.
I suddenly don’t think those two conversations are unrelated.
