Glutter Presents: Drum ‘n’ Bass

The Concert Series

Glutter Plugs and Doodles

A lot of people asked last week, “Who else have you seen?” And I couldn’t really remember, so I wrote it down. It turned out to be nine pages long. So I have split them up into seven categories, and shall post one a day for a week.

This stuff is the best, so it stands on it own section. Someone once wrote, you know a “raver” when you ask them what kind of music they like and they reply, “Good.” I wish I had the time I once had to truly get into this stuff because it’s still up-to-a-point underground and needs a lot of digging to find the gems.

Groove Rider:

The friends I went with left, but I insisted I had to stay, because they did not like dnb and it was the reason I was there. Hong Kong was not ready for it. The place cleared out after Seb Fontaine (Tony De Vit, passed away the evening before, although he was lined up to play). But what fun the leftovers had. I found myself dancing on the stage with the Smiley Queen and the MC.

Kruder and Dorfmeister:

Very experimental, difficult to dance to. Lots of stretched sounds and samples -probably better to see in a lounge than a party. My friend Sarah and I ended up holding hands above our respective heads, and lying on an L shaped couch then falling asleep. I was wearing UFO pants so I was okay. She on the other hand, had a very short red skirt on, that exposed everything for all to see. Very funny night.

Diesel Boy:

The time I saw him, there was mass drama with the promoter. The MC didn’t turn up and he was pissed off. He found himself sleeping in someone’s couch I think, so he wasn’t into it. Although the club in TST was fantastic, had murals of under water scenes with fish, sharks, jellys, and African big game all semi-glowing under the black lights. Absolutely the sort of space I fall in love with. Dark, dirty, years of parties, drinking, and smoke, corridors you have to wander through, little nooks and crannies. There was a DJ playing fantastic hip hop in the second room.

Goldie:

He was on a different planet. He started laying the breaks and then pulling the record and laid another break in. WTF? Ryan Snow, Patrick Lui and I were in the front waving our hands around begging him to keep the record on.

Boom Box Sound System:

Recently at Rock it, I think they are called that, but not sure, whoever, whatever, I was mightily impressed.

Mash Up: Hong Kong dnb Outfit. Always a good night.

-There are a host of other “famous” and unknown dub sets I have seen, but cannot tell you their names because I never knew it. A very notable one at Essential Festival 01. That’s what I loved about the scene. The idea anyone can stand up and make music, and it didn’t matter who it was, as long as the crowd responded. It changed, but that’s okay. I did famously missed the first LTJ Bukiem set on the US, which happened in a room 50 feet away from me, except I was sitting in the video arcade, in an enclosed car enjoying that instead. (Dumb, and never to be forgotten)

  1. Ohhh Noooooo! You missed LTJ Bukem? bummer. BTW I do know mu-ziq (u-ziq) they are fucking awsome(they come from classical music backgrounds and built their own synthesizers etc). I have one of their albums; tango ‘n vectif. BTW do you know of a NewZealand dub act called ‘Salmonella Dub’? worth checking out.

  2. the Dieselboy gig :::
Uh-hum.. well, I was part of the inside kru so I know what happened. The MC didn’t show up but Damian (dslboy) knew about it and didn’t get upset over it (after all, he was the one who wanted to pair with MC Duh, the MC who didn’t show).. Certainly was NOT upset at all and certainly had no drama with the promoter…
If anyone was upset that person would be the promoter for losing a plane ticket.. but all was good, it was one of the best dnb nights in HK.
